GUADELOUPE, CARIBBEAN

Guadeloupe is an archipelago and overseas department and region of France in the Caribbean.

The administrative capital is Basse-Terre. to the south of the main island. The region's largest economic capital and port is Pointe-à-Pitre, which lies in the centre of Guadeloupe.


 
 

HOTEL DE VILLE, POINTE-À-PITRE

Built in 1973 to a design by Architects Raymond Creveaux and Jacques Tessier, the town hall is located in the new part of the city, to the north of the old and separated by the Boulevard Faidherbe.

The four storey building is built in reinforced concrete and adopts a distinctly Corbusian approach, with a deeply articulated recessed facade and projecting volumes, including the cantilevered entrance and rooftop terrace canopies, shown here.

It was listed as a historical monument in 2011.

LE BÂTIMENT DU PORT, POINTE-À-PITRE

The harbour master’s office was built in 1930 by architect Ali Tur, who designed many buildings in Guadeloupe during the interwar period.

It was listed as a historical monument in 2013.

13 RUE ALSACE LORRAINE, POINTE-À-PITRE

A traditional framed building set within a narrow street in the historic old town of Pointe-à-Pitre, with commercial use at ground level and residential on the levels above, this one now functions as a tailor’s workshop and residence.

The building is clad in horizontal wood siding with solid shutters protecting door and window openings at all levels. There is a cast iron balcony at first floor.
