My illustrated tribute to the Art Deco elegance of the Grade II listed East Stand at Arsenal’s former Highbury stadium.

Designed by Claude Waterlow Ferrier and William Binnie and completed in 1936, the stand emerged during the interwar embrace of Art Deco, a style that sought to reconcile modernity with tradition.

Working within a dense North London streetscape, the architect produced a façade that is both restrained and monumental. Rather than overwhelming its surroundings, the building aligns with the rhythm of neighbouring Victorian houses while quietly asserting its presence through symmetry and proportion as one of the most refined expressions of Art Deco architecture ever applied to a sporting venue—a moment when football grounds aspired to the dignity of civic monuments rather than mere arenas of spectacle.

The stadium was converted into apartments in 2009-2010, with Arsenal moving to their new grounds at the nearby Emirates Stadium.
