The Barbican Estate was designed by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon and built between 1964 and 1975. It represents a site of special architectural interest for its scale, cohesion and the overall ambition of the project.

Gilbert House is a prominent north–south residential block of 88 flats and double-height penthouses in the heart of the Barbican Estate, completed in August 1969 as part of Phase III. It straddles the lake on tall stilts and is renowned for its panoramic views across the lakeside and towards St Giles' Church.

The Barbican lake includes its own waterfall/weir, contributing to a distinctive, tranquil brutalist landscape.
