The London Eye is a 135 metre observation wheel on the South Bank of the Thames. Designed by Marks Barfield Architects and Maunsell Structural Engineers (with specialist input from Hollandia and others) the London Eye combines clear engineering with public spectacle, serving as both a viewing platform and a city landmark.

It’s a rim-supported, cantilevered wheel held by two A-shaped steel supports on the south bank, giving it a floating look over the river.. The rim is steadied by 92 external tensioned steel cables that meet at the hub, creating a light, precise geometry. Enclosed, climate-controlled glass capsules are mounted on the rim in lightweight aluminium frames for panoramic views. The wheel turns slowly to allow uninterrupted viewing of the city’s old and new buildings.

The London Eye opened on 31st March 2000.
