The Lutine Bell, Lloyd’s of London Building, 1 Lime Street, London EC3M

Suspended within the heart of the high-tech, Grade I listed Lloyd's of London building, the Lutine Bell acts as a pivotal architectural and historical anchor.

Salvaged from the HMS Lutine in 1858, the 18th-century brass bell hangs from the original mahogany rostrum designed by Sir Edwin Cooper for the 1928 Building. Historically the bell was used to signal the fate of insured ships - once for loss, twice for safe return.

Now situated in the centre of the underwriting room, the bell's ceremonial function and location now creates a traditional contrast to the surrounding exposed steel concrete and glass atrium designed by Richard Rogers - a focal point for the dramatic 60-meter-high space and a symbolic link between the high-tech present and Lloyd's origins.
