After World War II the Camberwell Metropolitan Borough Council embarked upon a vigorous programme of home building. commissioning the Denmark Hill Estate in 1950 to provide 682 homes.

This six storey block of flats featured individual south facing balconies accessed from the kitchens, rather than the living room, a more utilitarian space that was useful for clothes drying.
